Founded in 1969, the Krewe of Rhea takes its name from Rhea, the daughter of Uranus
and the mother of Zeus, a titaness of Greek mythos. Beginning as an all-female
krewe, Rhea has been a popular part of the pageantry in Jefferson parish from
its inception. Besides being the first krewe to roll along Veterans Memorial
Boulevard in Metairie, for several years it was one of the only krewes from the
suburban realms to stage its balls in the Municipal Auditorium in the city proper.
Now formed by more than 250 male and female riders, the Krewe of Rhea features
a series of family floats, mini-floats for the ladies of the court and the
officers, and a special streetcar float for the ladies-in-waiting. This krewe
leads the way for what is now known as Super Parade Sunday in Jefferson Parish,
